Barford Lakes News

May Update

Posted by: Sarah Thomson, 29th May 2014 14:52PM

A little rainy and wet out there this week but hoping the weather will turn back on soon, been ignoring the forecast, they say it’ll rain and it turns out not all that bad!

The fish have mostly all spawned and there’s been some great catches on meat as the fish are getting back on the feed.  The lakes are looking lush at the moment – even through the grey cloud today!

Costcutter Evening Matches

Starting  next Wednesday 4th June and running for 6 weeks.  Fishing the Match Lake for the first three weeks and Colton for two weeks then the last match TBC.  Drawing at 5.30pm and fishing 6pm – 9pm.  The peg fee is £5 with pools at £1 or £5.

It’s a lovely time of the evening to fish and if you don’t normally fish matches it’s a great  introduction due to the low cost (you can hire a keepnet).

We can run a league also, £10 entry and the best 5 out of 6 matches count.

Teams of Three

We’re running a Teams of Three event on Saturday 7th June.  Draw is at Barford - fishing 10am – 3pm.  Entry £60 per team.  We are holding a spare team member list so can help make teams up if necessary.

4 Day Festival

Spaces are filling fast for our festival we hold on Friday 15th August – Monday 18th August.  Looking like another great bunch of anglers joining us for a long weekend.

Further details can be found by clicking here

Steve Jackson (former Fish-O=-Mania winner) said it was the friendliest festival he had fished.  All four results count and we have a hot buffet after the match on the last day.  Accommodation can be arranged and if you book early enough at the Premier Inn at the Showground you can get a good rate.

Fish-O-Mania

Talk about an Eastern Counties attack on the Fish-O-Mania final!  We’re so chuft for Ray King (Barford Tackle), Daniel Brydon (Sax Angling) and Gary Bull (Hinderclay) who have all qualified for the Fish-O-Mania final at Cudmore on Saturday 12th July, awesome!  There is a coach travelling from Norwich if you’re interested in going along and supporting them.  Costs will be around £20 depending on attendance.  Please get in touch with Daniel on Facebook or email back if you’re interested.

National Fishing League – Angling Trust

Similar to the County Points system run in the Angling Times the Trust is running a National League.  It’s FREE to enter and you can gain points for each Thursday and Saturday Open match you fish.  But you have to be registered before you can gain points.  So see the match organiser at the start and simply jot down your contact details and DOB on the form and you’re registered!  There’s a final in the Midlands at the end and the guy last year won £500!

New Tackle Account

We now have a Garbolino and Taska account.  We have a sprinkling of stuff in so far but if there’s anything we can help you with please let us know.  We currently have an offer on Marukyu Baits.  Buy a bag of Ground bait, a liquid additive and a tub of JPZ’s – RRP £21.97 – SALE PRICE £10.99.  Ask Jack for details in the shop.   Also Krill additive normally £6.99 we are offering at £3.50.

Cafe

We’re still currently open Thursday, Saturday and Sunday mornings form 8am – 11am.  We’re very flexible on opening times so if your club requires anything on different days please let us know and we’ll get Jeanie in.  Breakfasts are now £5.50 – all the trimmings of a full English with free hot drink and bread and now with a hash brown.

The pulled pork rolls and homemade coleslaw went down very well at the Fish-O-Mania qualifier and we’re able to offer an after match hot buffet for quite a reasonable price.

That’s all for now!  Hope you have a cracking weekend and a few fish too!

Awesome day at Barford for the qualifier today.  Kieron Rich (Daiwa and Angling Coach) won from Match Lake peg 2 with 227lb 1 ozs.  The last hour here at Barford was electric – we really couldn’t call who was going to win – although Kieron did steam the last couple of hours.  Kieron had fish to 12lb, four in the margins but caught most of his fish shallow on meat.

2014 Fish-O-Mania Qualifier Kieron Rich

Chris Vandervliet  (Drennan, Bowlers & Bait-Tech) had big Pleasure Lake lumps from peg 7 and came a respectable 2nd with 177lb 5ozs.  Chris had fish to 14lb and a Tench and fished down the edge on chopped worm and caster over groundbait.

2014 Fish-O-Mania Chris Vandervliet

Next peg round to Chris on peg 10 was Steve Jackson (Angling Coach, Tackle wholesaler and previous Fish-O winner).  Steve caught down the edge on chopped worm and caster and had fish to 15lb and had 154lb 11ozs and came 5th overall.

2014 Fish-O-Mania Steve Jackson

On peg 30 on the Match Lake Gary Miller (Maver Image) was also catching down the margins kindering  worms and caster and had 162lb 4ozs.  He had tench and carp to 7lb.

Quietly catching down the end on peg 17 on the Match Lake was Ricky Young (Browning Hotrods) and had an awesome 173lb 10ozs for third place overall.  Having carp to 8lb on worm and caster, all fish caught down the edge, but unfortunately had a slow last hour and only four fish.

Top weight on Colton was Richard Bond with 54lb 6ozs on peg 15 and a close second was Trevor Stanley with 51lb 4ozs from peg 21.

End pegs prevailed at Willow Lake.  It was won by Dean Kenworthy, who lost a number of fish at the start, but still piled in 93.15 from peg 17.  2nd on the lake from peg 1 was 62lb 14 was Matthew Greening.

Railway was won by Paul Christie from peg 28 with 56lb 9ozs and second was Adam Playford from peg 18 with 50lb 5ozs.

Top Lake at Barford was won by Kevin Shellie from peg 10 with 102lb and second was David Harold who was opposite on peg 6 with 85lb 13ozs.

Top day all round – little bit tough on the lakes off site but great action at Barford.  We had 11 weights over a ton!  Great to see everyone and hope you all had a good journey home.  Roooollll on the final!!

We are running a series of evening matches on Wednesdays starting from Wednesday 4th June.

The draw is at 5.30pm and fishing from 6pm - 9pm.  Trying to keep costs down and encourage some non-match anglers to join in, there will be two pools. £1 or £5.  The match will cost either £6 or £10

We can also run a league and you can enter an optional additional pool, the best 5 out of 6 matches count.

The first three matches will be on The Match Lake at Barford, the next two on Colton and the last can be decided the week before.

Fish-O-Mania This weekend

Posted by: Sarah Thomson, 14th May 2014 09:49AM
(Edited by: Sarah Thomson, 14th May 2014 09:53AM)

It’s that time of year again!  All set for Saturday, lakes are looking tidy and the margins at Colton have been opened up.

Pegs we’re using are pretty much the same as last year  – Match Lake (20 pegs), Pleasure Lake  (20 pegs), Top Lake (10 pegs), Colton (30 pegs), Railway (30 pegs) and Willow (20 pegs).  Deatils on the Lakes can be found by clicking here

Competitors will get a set of Match Rules at the draw – they haven’t changed much from last year but you can find them by clicking here

The gates will open at 7am and we’ll be serving breakfast in the cafe from then.

We’ve been asked a lot about reserves and spare spaces.  Any spare tickets will be allocated to reserves in order of the list, anyone not on the reserves list will be allocated after, in order of who sees Mick first in the morning!  The draw is at 9am and spare tickets will be allocated at 10am.

After match food this year are Burgers (with cheeses, onion and relish), chips and BBQ Pulled pork with homemade coleslaw.  After match food served from 4pm.

Spectators are welcome – but there are restrictions where you can watch from so please pop in Barford first, you get a great view of the action from the car park at Barford and the cafe will be open until 12.30pm (longer if there’s people about eating so phone ahead if you need any food after 12.30pm).

We have casters running – but please order to avoid disappointment – same with worm.  Caster are £3.20 and worm £20 a kilo, ½ kg - £11 and match packs are £6.  Will have plenty of maggot and dead red in the freezer.

Looking forward to the weekend, and the weather’s not looking too bad either!

There will be no day ticket Saturday don't forget!
